GradeHelpers was founded in 2004 and was created from a tutoring and enrichment program in Central America called Living English . Carolyn Flores, an Ontario certified ESL instructor and CASA Montessori teacher, has been a private tutor for the past 20 years (beginning with her first student in Grade 11) and always had a love and passion for teaching children while also learning from them. After graduating from university as an Urban Planner in 1997, she taught English in Central America before entering the professional world. She continued in this field, teaching English to children and adults for the past nine years in Honduras. She successfully created Living English in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, a tutoring program for children in bilingual schools and it is still operating as an important supplemental program for children in private and public schools. After returning to the Oakville, Ontario area, she found a need for a similar tutoring and coaching program that would focus on students in the elementary grades by providing the necessary tools and important skills for the years ahead.
GradeHelpers’s tutors all share the same passion and joy for teaching and mentoring students. They are experienced tutors with different educational backgrounds and are trained as tutors using a popular American tutoring program. A system has also been developed to provide on going training and support for all tutors working with the students. We know that all students can and will achieve their full learning potential with the help of a personal coach.
